Rural Homes Early Childhood Initiative

We are thrilled to introduce the Rural Homes Early Childhood Initiative (RHECI), a groundbreaking solution designed specifically for addressing the childcare crisis while simultaneously providing a pathway to attainable housing. The RHECI recognizes the unique challenges faced by families in rural communities and offers a comprehensive approach to providing affordable, high-quality childcare options.

The Rural Homes Early Childhood Initiative (RHECI) has created a wonderful opportunity for family child care in Ouray, Colorado. This innovative model has a provider centric approach in how we can support providers in establishing sustainable and high quality FCCH businesses. The RHECI is composed of two key components; a free family child care business training which is accredited for 30 hours of professional development by PDIS and a subsidized rent model to allow providers to start up their businesses worry-free. By completing this training, participants will be able to apply to move into one of two brand NEW homes designed for family child care, which can be purchased after two years of favorable tenancy!

Why is RHECI essential? The data speaks for itself. In addition to the state wide challenges, Ouray County faces its own unique childcare crisis. Ouray County has 158 children under the age of 5 and only 55 available childcare slots resulting in a 45% deficit. This deficit particularly affects low and medium-income households on many levels. Accessible and reliable childcare is not only crucial for the healthy development and future success of our children but also for attracting a competitive workforce and retaining families within our community.

Bright Futures will be facilitating the 12-week family child care business accelerator cohort offered in English and Spanish. To be considered as a candidate to own and operate a Waterview Family Child Care Home, participation in the cohort is a requirement. The curriculum to be taught was developed by a nationally renowned organization, All Our Kin. The cohort will cover principles in marketing, policy handbooks, contracts, and income and expense record keeping. Technical assistance in deed restrictions, mortgages, and the home-buying process will also be offered. Additionally, Bright Futures’ role in the region as the early childhood council and family resource center will enable participants to receive tailored support and guidance for licensing and quality improvement. Through our programs such as Pyramid Model Coaching and Parent as Teachers, we prioritize social-emotional learning and provide targeted coaching to enhance the overall well-being and development of children in care. Our goal is to ensure Family Child Care providers have the resources necessary for long-term success.
